From the description in the gospels and the geography of Palestine, we deduce that Jesus delivered His most famous sermon, the Sermon on the Mount, along the road that skirts the Sea of Galilee between Tiberius to Metula. About two miles from the seaside town of Tabgha stands a 330-foot hill where we believe Jesus delivered his longest recorded speech which we know as the “Sermon on the Mount”. If this is the location, the “Sermon on the Mound” might be a more accurate description, however, the title “Sermon on the Mount” has endured throughout Christian history. Perhaps it’s the content of the sermon itself, not the altitude, that is truly inspiring.
It would be impossible to address the details of the Sermon on the Mount in one lesson. However this Sunday we will step back and consider the sermon as a whole. We often pick out certain statements and concentrate on them which has great value, but what is this discourse saying together, what is Jesus is trying to communicate about the kingdom of heaven, that has inspired every generation of listeners since?
