Joseph Series “Dysfunctional Families”

It’s an amazing story, the kind of story that dreams are built on. After many unexpected twists and turns, and thirteen years of setbacks and disappointments, God blessed Joseph in an unimaginable way! As a result, he will become the second most powerful man in Egypt. This story however starts many years before when God promises Abraham to work though his family to bless the earth. Generations have passed and as this story opens we quickly realize that the family of Joseph is, to say the least, dysfunctional. In the opening verses we recognize jealousy and seething hatred between family members that erupts in a murderous spirit, deception, lies, and general darkness. And yet, God is at work, to bring salvation to this family. There is so much for us to learn from this family, for our families today.

Over the next few weeks we will look at three times of testing Joseph went through in a period between the ages of 17 – 30, and how God made him fruitful at every stage, culminating in his appointment as Pharaoh’s top Executive and Egypt’s highest civil servant. This Sunday we will begin in Genesis 37:2 when Joseph was just 17 years old.
