In the sea there are a wide variety of beautiful and unique creatures one of which is the blow fish. The blow fish has no particular value that I’m aware of, except maybe to develop the angler’s patience because its a notorious bait thief. The blow fish is unattractive; it has a large mouth and a wrinkled body that looks like worn-out leather. But when you turn it over and tickle it, the flabby fish puffs up until it is swollen like a globe.
If we’re not careful we can become like the blow fish. A little flattery, a little tickling of our ego and we swell up, giving the appearance of substance and yet in reality there’s nothing substantive to us at all were just air.
Paul challenges the reader of Philippians to live differently. He said, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility let each consider others more important than themselves” If we take this seriously, we won’t have the characteristics of the puffed-up blow fish, but we will have a powerful influence through the power of Christ.
